Professor Oluwole Ayoola Atoyebi was born at Ila Orangun, State of Osun, Nigeria on November 9, 1953. He had his secondary education at Oyan Grammar School, Oyan between 1966 and 1969. He was the Overall Best Final Year Student of his alma mater with seven distinctions at the West African School Certificate Examination. He enrolled at the University of Lagos for his preliminary medicine course in 1971 and passed Physics, Chemistry and Biology with A, A and B+.

During his training at the College of Medicine, the erudite scholar won almost all the available undergraduate awards. He topped his class by passing the Final degree examinations for MB.BS with HONOURS. In 1994.

Professor Atoyebi began his professional career in 1977 with his internship at the famous Adeoyo Specialist Hospital, Ibadan. He returned to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital for his Postgraduate Residency Training between 1980 and 1985. He did a five-month clinical attachment at the West Lothian Burns and Plastic Unit, Scotland.

He obtained the Fellowship of Medical College in Surgery (FMCS) in 1990 and thereafter the Fellowship of West African College of Surgeons (FWACS). He is Fellow of the International College of Surgeon(FICS) and also a fellow of the American College of Surgeon(FACS).

He became a full Consultant Surgeon in 1990 and was appointed a Lecturer I in the Department of Surgery of the College in 1992, and ultimately, the Governing Council of the University of Lagos appointed him full Professor in 2005.

The eminent scholar has published over 55 scientific articles in local and internationally acclaimed journals in his Specialty which is Surgical Gastro-enterology, Endocrinology and Breast. He has presented many quality papers at conferences within and outside the country and has supervised over 15 postgraduate research works. His special research interests are in Surgical Oncology and Surgical Infections.

Professor Atoyebi plays active roles within and outside the University of Lagos, as an Examiner for the MB.BS Examinations in the University of Lagos; Examiner for Faculty of Surgery of National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) for several years; Examiner for Primary, Part I & II Final Examinations in Surgery for the NPMCN and West African College of Surgeons (WACS). He has served as External Examiner to many universities.

Wole Atoyebi has served the nation in various capacities. He has served on several Committees of the Federal Ministry of Health. He has, at one time or the other, occupied virtually all key positions within the medical professional bodies. Among others, he was National President of the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) from 1984 - 1985 and rose to become the National President of Nigerian Medical Association, a body comprising of all doctors in Nigeria. He was appointed Provost of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos and successfully completed two terms of 2-years each.

Professor Atoyebi is a widely traveled man who has visited all the continents of the world. He enjoys membership of several professional as well as social associations. He is Fellow of Nigerian Institute of Management (FNIM).

Professor Oluwole Ayoola Atoyebi who is currently the Registrar of National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) was appointed Chairman of the Board of Management of LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Osogbo in December 2015.

Professor Atoyebi is married to Dr. (Mrs.) Oluwatoyin Atoyebi and they are blessed with children and grandchildren.
